Over the last few weeks we have shared with you some of the findings from our SORCE user conference whereby we debated how we could create an effective intranet. I thought it would be great to recap on everything we have covered. If you would like to read more you can download our guide to managing your intranet.
During the last few weeks we have shared with you how you can create an effective intranet with:
1) Intranet content
Everyone knows that an intranet without content isn’t an intranet, but everyone’s thoughts on what type of content is needed for an effective intranet differs depending upon our own experiences and organisational culture. Read the full intranet content blog.
2) Functionality
As an intranet manager you may not have the ability to quickly change the intranet functionality available to you, however it is a crucial part to the effectiveness of your intranet. Read the full intranet functionality blog.
3) Design
We all know intranet design is important, but how can design help with creating the perfect intranet? From colour to navigation, this group thought the effective intranet could be achieved through considered design. Read the full intranet design blog.
4) Structure and taxonomy
The structure and taxonomy of your intranet heavily influences how people find information and the actions that they perform on it. Our group of intranet managers considered how this could be designed to deliver an intranet that helped colleagues get work done. Read the full intranet structure and taxonomy blog.
5) Ownership and people issues
This group had to think about some of the wider issues with regards to the perfect intranet. Who owns the intranet within organisations is a question many forget to ask but agreeing this from the outset can really help intranet professionals position their intranet to the business. Read the full intranet ownership blog.
6) Remote worker engagement ,
The need for intranets to engage remote workers creates new challenges for an effective intranet. With varied IT literacy, multiple browsers, language, confidentiality, device security and accessibility being just some of the challenges, an effective intranet for remote workers has very specific needs. Read the full remote worker engagement blog.
7) Launch and adoption
How to launch an effective intranet and sustain engagement to encourage user adoption was a hot topic between our intranet managers. This group discussed different launch methods and agreed that some organisations may need to adapt their launch strategy depending upon their organisation’s size, culture and locations. Read the full intranet launch blog.
8) Tasks and business processes
The intranet is a great place to consolidate some of your day to day business processes and is often a way to improve them. This group looked at how business processes impact the perfect intranet. Read the full intranet tasks and business processes blog.
It’s important to keep in mind that an effective intranet is one that keeps pace with the requirements of your employees and supports them in achieving the objectives of your business. After all an intranet is a programme and not a project – the effective intranet of today may not continue to have the same impact as your business changes.
