Keeping the momentum: employee engagement as we enter Autumn

The mornings feel colder, the days are shorter, and autumn has arrived. For many organisations, this time of year can bring a natural dip in energy. The summer holidays are behind us, big end-of-year goals are looming, and the colder, darker months can take a toll on motivation.

So how can your intranet help keep the momentum going and ensure employees remain engaged, connected, and supported through autumn and into winter?

1. Re-energise communication

Now is a great time to refresh your intranet content and how you connect with your teams. Make communications seasonal, engaging, and clear. Recognising the season keeps messaging relevant and helps employees feel the business is in step with their experience.

2. Celebrate the wins so far

As we move into the final quarter, reflecting on achievements to date can provide a powerful morale boost. Highlight successes, big and small, and show employees the impact their work has had. This helps create a sense of pride and purpose.

3. Revisit goals and priorities

Autumn is a natural reset point. Encourage managers and teams to revisit goals and adjust priorities where needed. Breaking larger targets into smaller, achievable milestones keeps people motivated and reduces the sense of being overwhelmed.

4. Support wellbeing during seasonal changes

With shorter days and colder weather, employee wellbeing needs extra attention. Promote resources around mental health, flexible working, and work-life balance. Small gestures, like team walks at lunchtime or social activities can go a long way.

5. Bring people together

Connection is the antidote to disengagement. Use your intranet or digital workplace to promote collaboration, share stories, and spotlight teams. Creating moments of togetherness whether in-person or online helps sustain engagement and belonging.

🍁 Final thought: Autumn doesn’t need to signal a slowdown. With intentional communication, recognition, and support, organisations can harness this season as a time to refocus and drive engagement, setting the stage for a strong finish to the year.
